SmartKey rekeying on Kwikset cylinders requires the current key. Kwikset’s SmartKey method involves inserting the working key alongside the tool to reset pins, then feeding a new KW 1 cut key. Without the current operating key, the mechanism cannot be rekeyed. Traditional locks share similar requirements, so always verify the lock type before a tool-based rekey to avoid errors.

How does a single dummy knob differ from a double model?

A single dummy knob mounts on only one side of the door without a latch or operating mechanism. It serves as a decorative pull or push handle. In contrast, a double dummy set features non-turning knobs on both faces, offering a symmetrical look while still lacking any locking or latching function. Both types work on pre-drilled or surface-mounted doors but perform purely ornamental roles.

Is Kwikset SmartKey compatible with all keys?

Kwikset’s SmartKey technology pairs exclusively with KW1 keys. Only factory-cut Kwikset keys and correctly spec’d locksmith copies fit this system. Other brands’ keyways or unauthorized blanks will not engage the sidebar mechanism required for user-initiated rekeying. This design safeguards security while offering flexible reconfiguration.
